The Panch Kedar Story

The story of the Panch Kedar is based on a folk legend about the Pandavas from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. The Pandavas defeated their cousins, the Kauravas, in the war of Kurukshetra. The Pandavas felt guilty for killing their relatives and other renowned souls. The Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva, who hid himself in the mountains of Garhwal as a bull. The Pandavas chased the bull, and when it tried to escape, it vanished into the ground. Different parts of the bull’s body appeared in five different locations, which became the Panch Kedar temples. The Pandavas built temples at the locations where the parts of the bull fell.

Kedarnath

Revered as the abode of Lord Shiva’s hump, Kedarnath is a popular pilgrimage site. The temple, nestled amidst snow-capped peaks, offers panoramic views of the Mandakini Valley.

Tungnath

Located at the highest altitude of all the Panch Kedar temples, Tungnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s arms. The trek to Tungnath is challenging but rewarding, leading to a serene temple with stunning views of the Chandrashila peak.

Madhyamaheshwar

Situated in a secluded valley, Madhyamaheshwar is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s navel. The temple is surrounded by lush green forests and offers a tranquil atmosphere.

Rudranath

Known as the “Rudra’s Abode,” Rudranath is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s face. The temple complex offers breathtaking views of the Chaukhamba peak.

Kalpeshwar

Located in the Garhwal Hills, Kalpeshwar is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s hair. The temple is relatively less crowded and offers a peaceful ambiance.
